California marijuana farms trash and poison the environment

California marijuana farms siphon large amounts of water from streams and rivers endangering salmon and other fish, clear-cut wide areas, poison the area and water with pesticides, deliberately kill predators and animals that might eat the crops, and in general make a devastating mess and trash the environment.

“Scientists suspect that nutrient runoff from excess potting soil and fertilizers, combined with lower-than-normal river flow due to diversions, has caused a rash of toxic blue-green algae blooms in the North Coast rivers over the last decade.”

While there are small-scale operations in these remote areas, drug cartels often have gigantic grows on public land.

Indoor growing is problematic too.

A study in the journal Energy Policy calculated that indoor marijuana cultivation could be responsible for 9% of California’s household electricity use.

Let’s just legalize marijuana completely then regulate heavily. The current situation is untenable as California marijuana farms are making a mess that will take years, maybe decades, to remediate.

Criminalizing of marijuana targets poor, people of color

Bizarrely, it is Democrats who favor continues funding of programs that send cops into low-income Hispanic and Black neighborhoods looking for young people to bust for tiny amounts of marijuana. Bush and Republicans wanted to kill the programs, Democrats insisted the programs stay, says Charles M. Blow in a NYT Op-ed.

For instance, the report says that the City of Los Angeles “arrested blacks for marijuana possession at seven times the rate of whites.”

This imbalance is not specific to California; it exists across the country.

The future of US politics is Prop 19

Al Giordano

Nomadic, and on the move, more reliant on the Internet than the television for their news intake, they’re the future of the United States. And they’re also a lot more multi-racial – and more actively defy societal apartheids – than the rest of the population. OMG! Wait”¦ wait”¦ see that little light bulb popping on over our heads? By Jove, I think we get it! Those are the 2008 first time Obama voters, duh! And getting them to vote in the midterm elections is the biggest headache that the White House and the Democratic party has right now leading up to November 2.

This would seem to be a no-brainer. The Democratic Party gets behind legal pot and millions of no-landline-phone, likes-a-few-tokes young voters go to the polls and vote for Democrats.

Yet both Jerry Brown and Barbara Boxer oppose Prop 19. Maybe after it passes, then the Democratic establishment will start coming around. But even with them being against it now, it’s clear that the race if California is being tilted in favor of Democrats because of the pro-Prop 19 vote.

And that is an earthquake politicians will not long ignore.

Legal marijuana is a states rights issue

Decriminalizing or legalizing marijuana is a growing trend in many states and is a direct challenge to the authority of the federal government. Not that’s there’s much the feds can do about it. But believe they are worried, especially if the trend continues and states begin to challenge the federal government on other issues.

It’s also instructive to watch who opposes legal marijuana and the scare tactics they are using. Lots of folks have vested interests in drugs remaining illegal; those who build prisons, many in law enforcement, and of course, the dirty banks and hedge funds that launder the drug money. They don’t want drugs legal and could care less about the appalling bloodshed in Mexico now as long as they get their blood money.

Will Democrats support legal marijuana to mobilize young voters?

They may do it kicking and screaming but it’s dawning on Democrats that supporting legal marijuana could easily bring young voters out in huge numbers.

Of course if Obama sends the Marines to Humboldt County after Prop 19 passes in California, then all bets are off. This is not just about legal weed, it’s also about state’s rights vs the federal government.
