The spill, the scandal and the president

Hours after BP’s rig sank on April 22nd, a white board in NOAA’s war room in Seattle displays the administration’s initial, worst-case estimate of the spill — 64,000 to 110,000 barrels a day. Via al.com

Has Obama figured out whose ass to kick yet?

Philipe Cousteau reports on Treehugger from the Louisiana Gulf coast. He says things will get much worse before they get better. And it’s already bad now.

Could BP be charged under RICO?

SFGate details why. The high-def video they finally released today after being forced to by Sen. Boxer and Markey shows that the leak at the wellhead was massive, way more than the 1,000 barrels a day BP originally claimed. (Emphasis in original)

Leifer cited satellite data that appeared to show the leaking well’s flow was [...]

Oil hits Alabama beaches, headed for Florida

Alabama Gov. Bob Riley is angry about U.S. Coast Guard decisions he says have left parts of the Gulf Coast vulnerable to pollution from the oil spill.

Riley told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the Coast Guard wrongly decided to remove oil barriers from the Alabama and Mississippi coasts and take them to Louisiana [...]

Obama’s Katrina? Maybe worse, says NYT

I’d say it’s more like Obama’s Chernobyl. His obvious disinterest in the whole affair, lack of compassion for the victims, and endless refusal to take BP to task are curious indeed, especially for a seasoned politician.

Contrast Obama’s remote, professorial approach with that of Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal who passionately cares about the Gulf Coast [...]

Still, I have never seen the anger down here as what we’ve seen since the Gulf Oil Spill. If there ever was a reason to use the phrase ’straw that broke the camel’s back’, I would say this is it. It has caused both Donna Brazille and James Carville to openly criticize the President. [...]

Why Obama should put BP under temporary receivership

Robert Reich

If the government can take over giant global insurer AIG and the auto giant General Motors and replace their CEOs, in order to keep them financially solvent, it should be able to put BP’s north American operations into temporary receivership in order to stop one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history.

Matt Simmons claims much bigger gulf leak in progress

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4whiKQgnp4w&feature=player_embedded

Simmons says remove BP and send in the military and supertankers as maybe use bombs to seal the leaks, something Russia has successfully done. Also, the plumes are far from the wellhead leak. This implies that there are other, much larger leaks.

Truth be told, I’m not certain whether this is alarmist or accurate. [...]

Liberal blogs wistfully propose what Obama should do on Gulf oil leak

There’s been a spate of articles from liberal and progressive blogs lately saying what Obama should do on the spill. The tone is wistful, like they’re finally realizing that no, he isn’t going to do the right thing, that’s he’s not liberal but rather a corporatist, and a rather timid one at that.
