Holocaust archives uncovered

Email from CBS News “60 Minutes”

Good afternoon. I wanted to give you a heads-up on a story that will be running this Sunday, Dec. 17 (7PM ET/PT on CBS) on “60 MINUTES” about a long-secret German archive that houses a treasure trove of information on 17.5 million victims of the Holocaust. The archive, located in the German town of Bad Arolsen, is massive (there are 16 miles of shelving containing 50 million pages of documents) and until recently, was off-limits to the public. But after the German government agreed earlier this year to open the archives, CBS News’ Scott Pelley traveled there with three Jewish survivors who were able to see their own Holocaust records.

It’s an incredibly moving piece, all the more poignant in the wake of this week’s meeting of Holocaust deniers in Iran. We’re trying to get word out about the story to people who have a special interest in this subject. So we were hoping you’d consider sending out something to your listserve and/or posting something on your website.Further information will also be available on our website

US Army might break Goodyear strike

The US Army is considering measures to force striking workers back to their jobs at a Goodyear Tire & Rubber plant in Kansas in the face of a looming shortage of tyres for Humvee trucks and other military equipment used in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The article notes there is no shortage now, but that there could be. So, not satisfied with preemptive attacks on other countries, the US now wants to do the same to its own workers? Sounds like an excuse to smash unions to me.

Life imitates humor

When plans for the apartheid wall between the US and Mexico were announced, more than a few cartoonists joked about how builders of the wall would use undocumented workers to build it. As it turns out, they were right…

Border fence firm snared for hiring illegal workers

A fence-building company in Southern California agrees to pay nearly $5 million in fines for hiring illegal immigrants. Two executives from the company may also serve jail time. The Golden State Fence Company’s work includes some of the border fence between San Diego and Mexico.

Bush wants to send more troops to Iraq

Yes, more troops. On a “temporary” basis (nudge, nudge, wink, wink), of course.

Ok Democrats, you got elected on a surge of antiwar sentiment. Now is the time to act. Block the funding, raise a stink, stop the wars. Now.

Else everyone will think you’re both lame and complicit.

Hundreds of cities are actively taking steps to reduce their energy consumption and cut down on global warming. They are signing on to agree to the Kyoto Protocol. They hope their actions will encourage larger cities and the federal government to do the same.
