DJ Mitchell, an American, has been volunteering with Sarvodaya, a Sri Lanka organization working for peace and to end their civil war. He is currently there, and sends this report.
“I’m in Sri Lanka again, helping on a peace initiative, and trying to stay current on the latest conditions. The situation in the East had become complicated, and I wanted to understand it better by seeing it firsthand. I rode with Sarvodaya’s Executive Director, my friend Vinya, as far as Anuradhapura, up in the dry zone in the central part of Sri Lanka. Along the way, we marveled at how things had changed. The last time I’d been here was 1999. At that time, checkpoints with alert soldiers and automatic weapons abounded. The hospital had been filled with wounded soldiers, and I’d been denied entrance to visit a friend. The city had seemed hushed.”

WordPress now will import directly from your Blogger blog! (Ditto for Movable Type and TypePad.) Blogger continues to have major server problems several times a week, plus they haven’t updated Blogger much in years. Contrast this with WordPress, which has a thriving user base, hundreds of plug-ins, and continues to release major new versions.
This import is simple and easy. I imported Sue’s old Blogger blog into worldspectacle.wordpress.com in about 5 minutes with a couple of clicks. (Her blog has no new content yet, it’s coming..)
There’s one gotcha from Blogger into WordPress (from WordPress Matt in the comments to the announcement)
If you had your photos hosted on photos*.blogger.com they will still be embedded but Blogger prevents “hotlinking†images they host from any domain other than blogspot.com.
We’re brainstorming a solution for this.

Senior US official in Iraq admits stealing $2 million of reconstruction aid and taking bribes in exchange for $8 million worth of contracts. (From BBC news)
Meanwhile, a new documentary, “Shadow Company“, seeks to explore the secret world of Private Military Companies, including the British-run firm Aegis, whose $293 million Iraq contract raised many eyebrows when it was awarded in 2004.
Meanwhile, Dubya wants billions more for war and Rumsfeld et al are making threatening noises about attacking Iran. How much more money will go to these insane wars for empire as well as being channelled into corruption and payoffs?
As Country Joe said about the Vietnam War, and it’s still true
“Come on Wall Street, don’t move slow
Man, this is war au go go
There’s plenty good money to be made
By supplying the army with the tools of trade”
