German secret agents helped in Iraq invasion

A scandal is brewing in political Berlin after two news organizations reported Wednesday that German intelligence agents helped the US during military operations in Iraq. Germany’s foreign minister denied the reports.

In a front page story in the respected Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), renowned investigative journalist Hans Leyendecker and colleague Wolfgang Krach quoted a high-ranking German security source as saying that two Federal Intelligence Agency agents (BND) in Baghdad helped the US military assess targets during the air invasion of Iraq in the war’s opening weeks.

The office of Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who thrust US-German relations into an ice age through his disapproval of the Iraq invasion, reportedly knew about the cooperation and approved of it, according to the article. The cooperation was made after a "political decision" by Schröder’s coalition government. "This wasn’t the decision of some department head," the SZ quoted their source as saying.

Since the Green Party was a member of the ruling coalition in Germany then, with Green Joschka Fischer as their equivalent of US Secretary of State, this means the Green Party, in violation of their founding principle of nonviolence, must have been involved in an unprovoked attack on another country. Iconic German Party founder Petra Kelly would be appalled.

Podcast: Demand extradition of Posada

Action alert by ANSWER Coalition.
U.S. government may free terrorist Luis Posada Carriles.
Demand: Bush, Extradite Posada to Venezuela!
No harboring of terrorist Posada!

Watch the video in Windows Media Format (15.1 MB) or QuickTime (7.5 MB). 6:18 minutes.

Extreme right wing CIA operative Luis Posada Carriles is wanted in Venezuela for bombing an airliner with innocents on board. He has boasted of blowing up hotels in Cuba. Sounds like a terrorist to me. He’s being held in the US on immigration violation charges, and the Bushies want to free him. The only reason he was held on the charges is because the public mobilized. It’s time to mobilize again.

More information

(He) is accused of being one of the masterminds of the bombing of a Cubana airliner back in 1976 with the loss of 73 innocent lives, including the Cuban junior fencing team. He was in a Venezuelan prison awaiting trial on that charge when he escaped in 1985. Venezuela long ago asked for his extradition and now has done so again.

He also bragged to The New York Times in a 1998 interview that he had ordered the bombing of a number of tourist hotels in Havana, acts which led to the death of an Italian tourist and the wounding of several other people.

And then in 2000, he was arrested in Panama, and later convicted of "endangering public safety" because of his involvement in a plot to assassinate Fidel Castro by blowing up a public auditorium where Castro was to speak before an audience of some 1,500.

On June 15, Venezuela again formally asked the U.S. government to extradite him to Venezuela. But it seems clear that the U.S. had — and has — no intention of extraditing him. The most likely thing is that he will remain in custody for a time under the illegal entry charge and will then be freed.

In other words, the Bush administration will then have given shelter to another terrorist, to join others such as Orlando Bosch, who has lived freely and unrepentant in Miami since 1989.

Alito and the non-opposition

Alito will be confirmed with barely a whimper of protest from the Democrats. You didn’t expect otherwise, did you? The disconnect between D.C. Democrats and the rank and file becomes more obvious every day.

The Daou Report blogged yesterday about this, calling it “The (Broken) Triangle: Progressive bloggers in the wilderness.”

This, then, is the reality: progressive bloggers and online activists - positioned on the front lines of a cold civil war - face a thankless and daunting task: battle the Bush administration and its legions of online and offline apologists, battle the so-called “liberal” media and its tireless weaving of pro-GOP narratives, battle the ineffectual Democratic leadership, and battle the demoralization and frustration that comes with a long, steep uphill struggle.Forming a triangle of blogs, media, and the political establishment is an essential step … Simply put, without the participation of the media and the political establishment, the netroots alone cannot generate the critical mass necessary to alter or create conventional wisdom.

This is an intelligent, thoughful piece, however I do not share his pessimism. That’s probably because I’m a ‘radical’ and long ago realized the country is run by a small elite who care little for anyone else. That many others now are also realizing this is real and genuine progress, signs of major change happening in the country. When enough people realize this, then act on it, the corrupt inbred power structure will collapse. It’s happened before in history, it will happen again.

Is it that D.C. Democrats are inept? Well, partly. But’s that hardly explains their craven refusal to confront the neocons. The truth is, they’re all part of the wealthy cabal that runs the country, and except for a few social issues, there’s little difference between the parties. They both supported the Iraq War, are actively trying to destroy the social safety net, and have presided over massive deficit spending. So, who’s geting rich off all this? Why they are, of course. It’s a class thing. They (and their corporate donors, etc.) become increasingly wealthy while the rest of the country gets poorer. The interests of the elite are directly opposed to the interests of the rest of us.

Radicals know this. We organize against it. And y’know what? We tend to be optimistic about the future (and wouldn’t be organizing if we weren’t!). Also, being on the front lines, as it were, you see the change happening in real time. People are becoming radicalized, our numbers are growing.

The Daou Report concludes:

Maybe the Democratic establishment wants it so, maybe they don’t know better, but progressive bloggers and activists are starting to see the bitter reality of their isolation: the triangle is broken and they’re on their own until further notice.

We have each other. Our message IS spreading through the land. This is the time to re-double efforts. The country is approaching a tipping point, let’s tip it our way. And we don’t need the Democratic establishment to do it either.
