The mood in the country has shifted on the war

Eighteen months ago ANSWER L.A. held a major demo in Hollwood with several thousand people and the media ignored it. Yesterday we called a protest on 18 hours notice against Rumsfeld speaking here this morning. One hundred people came, not bad for a weekday morning action, and we got major media attention and made CNN national news.

There’s been a sea change in public opinion on the war!

Madness risen from Hell

Britain’s Muslim scapegoats

Huge rise in race attacks on all ethnic minorities across Britain. Senior Tory MP tells Muslims: ‘If you don’t like our way of life, get out’. Senior Muslim tells women not to wear veils in public for fear of assault.

Police reported that faith-hate crimes had risen by 600 per cent compared with last year.

Israeli lynched after shooting four Arabs

A teenaged Israeli gunman has been lynched after killing four people on a bus in an Israli Arab town.

Eyewitnesses quoted on Israeli television described the gunman as bearded and wearing a Jewish skull cap and military uniform. Media reports said he was absent without leave from his army unit, and was a member of the extremist Kach party.

“If this attack had occurred in a Jewish neighbourhood and the attacker was Arab, he would have been killed immediately,” one unnamed witness was quoted as saying by the Jerusalem Post.

When governments act like thugs, some of the populace will do likewise.

If your copy of Windows fell off a truck

Microsoft has a new policy for Windows updates. For the past few months they’ve had an optional online test to determine if your copy of Windows is legal. It now appears the test is no longer optional. While you may still be able to get security updates with bootleg Windows, you will no longer get regular Windows updates.

If you flunk the test, you can now (’for a limited period’) buy a new key for Windows online directly after flunking. They email you a new registration key, no reinstall of Windows is needed, and also snail mail an install CD.

A full version of Windows XP is $199, the upgrade is $99. Microsoft is charging a reasonable $149 to upgrade a bootleg copy of XP to a legal version.

To test your version in XP, Start/All/Programs, Click Windows Update.

Schwarzenegger, Guard withhold e-mails in spying probe

The Schwarzenegger administration and California National Guard are refusing to make public a series of 20 e-mails between two of the governor’s spokesmen and a Guard official regarding a Mercury News story in June that revealed the existence of an intelligence-gathering unit.

The unit was gathering intelligence on antiwar and peace groups.

Sen. Joe Dunn, D-Garden Grove, who is heading a probe into the unit, said the refusal only furthers suspicion the Guard unit may have engaged in domestic spying.

The Guard also acknowledged Wednesday that seven of its computers went missing around the time the story was published and just recently reappeared.

Uh huh, “went missing”..

“Given the evasive position that the governor’s office has taken, it raises one critical question: `Governor, what are you hiding?’ ” Dunn said. “Knowing that invoking executive privilege is a very serious consideration and that the governor could take a big political hit for this, I have to believe there is something more in play here.”

This is not a misprint

Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. worked behind the scenes for gay rights activists, and his legal expertise helped them persuade the Supreme Court to issue a landmark 1996 ruling protecting people from discrimination because of their sexual orientation.

It’ll be fun to watch the neocon/fundie response to this!
