The Culture War escalates

The Culture War escalates

High court in Massachusetts rules Gays have right to marry.

Massachusetts’ highest court ruled today that same-sex couples are legally entitled to wed under the state constitution.

This ruling, which has been expected for months, will set off nuclear attacks from the Right, and may make gay rights a central issue in the 2004 election.

Vermont, another New England state, a few years back under Governor Howard Dean, legalized gay marriage in all but name.

In New England, where I am from, one’s sex life and religious beliefs are generally considered to be private matters and not the business of the state to snoop into, regulate, or impose values upon.

A Democratic Loophole?.

“Republicans fear left-leaning advocacy groups will raise up to $420 million in unregulated contributions,” The Hill reports. One of the those groups, Moveon.org, is profiled in the New York Times today.

Because of this, Republicans are now concerned that Bush “may not be able to fill his re-election fund with anything close to what Democrats are raising to defeat him next year.

Breaking news: Grocery unions to…

Breaking news: Grocery unions to sue grocery companies for anti-trust

Over the weekend.,  Deep Audit, our resident forensic accountant, mentioned the KNX news website said Ralphs had an hidden agreement to share profits with the other grocery firms in the strike, and that the unions might sue.

The story was gone when she went back to find the link, so, we thought maybe it was unconfirmed so the story was pulled.

However, as it turns out, the story was accurate!

A highly reliable source who is close to the story has confirmed to PoliZeros that “the grocery companies do have a profit sharing agreement, referred to specifically as a ‘mutual-aid pact.’  The unions are going to sue over it; they will soon file an state anti-trust lawsuit and others close to the union will file a shareholders derivative suit as well.”

Menawhile, these grocery stores are having trouble stocking the shelves and keeping their stores in order, neatly demonstrating that the scabs working there now don’t have the skills the union workers have. Further, many stores have reduced their operating hours and may even close on Thanksgiving - testament to the power of the strike.

Arnold reinvents history! Soviet tanks invade Austria!!

From his inagural speech

“To an immigrant like me, who, as a boy, saw Soviet tanks rolling through the streets of Austria, to someone like me who came here with absolutely nothing, and gained absolutely everything, it is not fanciful to see this state as a golden dream,” he said.

Soviet tanks in Austria, huh? Jeez, Arnold must have been really stoned that day, or maybe he was thinking of Hungary - because no Soviet tanks have EVER rolled through the streets of Austria (as invaders, see below).

One wonders what he will make up next.

Update: A reader mentions in the comments that Russian tanks entered Austria in 1944. However they were viewed by Austrians as =liberators=, not invaders, which makes Schwarzenegger’s comment even more deceptive. Plus, he was born in 1947…

Bush is afraid. Very afraid

Bush is afraid. Very afraid

Kos, as always, gets it right

This is sadly typical from our chickenshit commander-in-chief:

George Bush was last night branded chicken for scrapping his speech to Parliament because he feared being heckled by anti-war MPs.

But senior White House adviser Dr Harlan Ullman said: “They would have loved to do it because it would have been a great photo-opportunity.

“But they were fearful it would to turn into a spectacle with Labour backbenchers walking out.”

Even The Guardian must be feeling the pressure from Blair and Bush, hence their report that the “majority backs Bush”. Well uh, no. If you actually read the article, it says 62% of voters believe “the US is ‘generally speaking a force for good, not evil, in the world’ — which is not at all the same as saying they back Bush.

As for the war, 47%, 41% oppose, again, scarely a vote of confidence in Bush or Blair.
