L.A. Times Photographer Fired for Photoshopping Photos.

This lengthy Los Angeles Times photo correction addresses the manipulation of a front page photo and the subsequent firing of its photographer. Working from two source photos, Brian Walski combined them in Photoshop to create a more compelling image, but was caught when someone noticed that some people appeared twice in the background of the modified photo.”

The war

The war

Can anyone make any sense of what’s actually happening?

The US propaganda fog threatens to blanket all. No no no, Rumsfeld says, Bad Lt. Colonel Walker, we are “war-gamed” for the right war, and everything is going just swimmingly, thanks for asking.

We’re attacking, no we’re not, we’re bunkered down for 40 days. Wait, we just clobbered the Republican Guard, or maybe we didn’t.

And in a truly weird twist, Army Pfc. Jessica Lynch, who was rescued after a week of being a POW, is from Palestine WV. Just like when the space shuttle blew up, most of the debris fell near Palestine TX.

What to wear to a…

What to wear to a demonstration

After, what ten major march and rallies in the past few months, I’ve decided the best clothes to wear to a peace march - especially now that it’s getting warm here in L.A. - are backpacking clothes.

Hiking boots.
Yes, they weigh more. They also give vastly better support than shoes or sandals. I’ve boulder-hopped down canyons in mine, so I completely trust them at demos! Then, two pairs of socks, one light inner pair, one heavier outer pair, to protect against blisters.

Convertible cargo pants.
These are long-legged pants where you can unzip the lower legs and turn them into shorts. The lower leg parts should have zippers on the side so you can take them off while wearing boots.

Big floppy straw hat.
I used to think Little Old Ladies (LOLs) who wore big floppy straw hats were silly … until I wore one. Then I saw they give huge shade protection and lots of ventilation. LOLs, I then decided, were way smarter than I’d thought.

Water
Outdoor supply stores have all manner of inventive ways to carry water, one should work for you.

Turning left on red is…

Turning left on red is part of driving culture in L.A.!

Turn left on red? Say what, you say?

An explanation; on those traffic lights in L.A. without left-turn signals, cars stack up in the intersection, and when the light turns red, they quickly skedaddle, making that left before they get broadsided.

To add to the festivities, cars partly in the intersection, or sometimes not even in the intersection at all, often make a left - again, after the light has turned red.

We’re used to this, however, for some bizarre reason it totally unnerves newcomers to L.A. traffic to see 5 cars turn left after the light has turned red. Imagine.

Texas court acts to clear 38, almost all Black, in drug case

“Conceding that they had made a catastrophic mistake in relying solely on the uncorroborated testimony of an undercover officer, prosecutors moved today to overturn the convictions of 38 people, almost all of them black, who were caught in a series of drug arrests in 1999 that tore this town apart.”

In Texas, no less.
