Marc Elias: How To Oppose the Second Trump Presidency

Marc Elias

Marc Elias runs Democracy Docket, which has filed hundreds of voting rights lawsuits against Republicans and won most of them.

He details five ways to oppose Trump now. All of us can do them. No anticipatory obedience! Watch the video and read the article.

1. Prioritize effective electoral campaigns that maximize the chances of electing Democrats and defeating Republicans.

There is a clear and obvious difference between Speaker Jeffries and Speaker Johnson. Electing Democrats is crucial. Winning comes first.

2. Be a big tent full of diversity of new policy ideas and approaches to governing.

Debates are fine. So are arguments and disagreements. That’s how we arrive at new policy ideas. However, let’s forget circular firing squads and focus on the real opponent.

3. New and existing institutions to bolster the opposition, not work against it.

It’s ok to let ineffective institutions fail. This allows new and more effective ones to grow.

4. Cultivate and amplify new communication methods and messengers.

Go beyond legacy media. Find and build new platforms, like social media and podcasts. Forget NYT and WaPo, who mostly seem very impressed with their own supposed importance.

5. Use every legal tool available to challenge Trumpism in court. One of the most important lessons from the last eight years is that the courts matter.

Litigate and challenge Republicans in court relentlessly and nonstop. There are more judges now who were appointed by Democrats than by Republicans.

Let’s be a serious, formidable opposition to Trump and MAGA!
