30 years clean and sober today

Thirty years ago today on Earth Day, I stopped doing drugs and alcohol and returned to Planet Earth. For anyone having addiction problems, you can do it too. One day at a time.

When I tell people how much I drank and used, they’re usually just kind of speechless. Meth and Budweiser kicked my ass. It got really bad. I stumbled into a recovery group one day, it saved my life, and I’ve been in it ever since.

If one recovery group doesn’t work for you, try another one. A friend of mine got clean by joining LDS. It doesn’t matter how you get clean and sober, just that you do. And then stop drinking and using. That’s the crucial point. Alcoholics and addicts can never safely drink or use again. Ever.

It’s way easier to do it when you’re in a group. Because whatever you did out there, someone in the group did it too, and probably worse. We’ve all been there. The newcomer realizes they are no longer alone. That’s when the magic and the recovery happens.
