eBay switching to open source OpenStack cloud

eBay and its subsidiary PayPal are dumping VMware in favor of OpenStack, the open source cloud software developed by Rackspace, NASA, and IBM. They plan to put OpenStack on all 80,000 of their servers.

This could be bad news for both VMware and Amazon Web Services, the biggest cloud computing vendor. Both have proprietary software while OpenStack allows customers to choose from any number of vendors and platforms.

Most of the internet already runs on open source software, including this blog, which uses WordPress, PHP, and MySQL.
