Google’s Netflix moment, shutting down Google Reader

Google has pissed off millions of geeks, their core users and defenders, by announcing that Google Reader will be shut down. Netflix tried the same type of thing in 2011 when they said DVDs would no longer be available by mail and were forced to eat their words and rescind a few months later.

Google Reader is an RSS feed reader that allow news from hundreds of sites to be read in one place. For journalists, bloggers, and anyone following news in bulk, feed readers are essential. So, what Google has done is baffling and stupid. can they be trusted now? Not really. Hey, maybe they’ll decide to shut down GMail next, who knows?

Feedly looks to be a good substitute. I’ll have more tomorrow on other replacements.
