Permafrost is all the ancient plant matter that used to be safely frozen away in the arctic but is now beginning to thaw, releasing methane into the atmosphere. This creates a feedback loop of more thawing, more methane released, higher temperatures and dramatically less chance we’ll be able to stop it.
