The Catholic Church had a conference in Salt Lake City last week about immigration reform. They choose Salt Lake City as the location because of the Utah Compact.
The Utah Compact on immigration, endorsed by LDS, is hugely sane. Among the points, local law enforcement should not focus on federal code violations, we need a reasonable federal policy, families should not be broken up, immigrants should be welcomed.
The way we treat immigrants will say more about us as a free society and less about our immigrant neighbors. Utah should always be a place that welcomes people of goodwill.
One of my cousins is a priest who is deeply involved in immigrant rights. He was at the conference and said while there is much work to be done, that it was successful.
