Cartel: The Coming Invasion of Mexico’s Drug Wars

Silvia Longmire’s upcoming book, Cartel: The Coming Invasion of Mexico’s Drug Wars, available for pre-order now, has the unsettling thesis that drug war in Mexico will be crossing into the US soon.

She blogs at Mexico’s Drug War “An ongoing analysis of southwest border violence issues by an experienced intelligence professional” which is indispensable reading, along with Borderland Beat, for what’s happening just south of the border now.

Having followed Mexico’s cartels for years, security expert Sylvia Longmire takes us deep into the heart of their world to witness a dangerous underground that will do whatever it takes to deliver drugs to a willing audience of American consumers. The cartels have grown increasingly bold in recent years, building submarines to move up the coast of California and digging elaborate tunnels that both move drugs north and carry U.S. military grade firearms back to fuel the drug war. Channeling her long experience working on border issues, Longmire offers real solutions to the critical problems facing Mexico and the United States, including programs to deter youth in Mexico from joining the cartels and changing drug laws on both sides of the border.

From her blog, about the book

The enemy has already crossed the front lines, and has been operating – and thriving – on enemy territory for decades. DTOs [Drug Trafficking Organizations] are often able to get contraband past our border checkpoints, and are skilled in techniques of deception and evasion. They’re constantly testing our defenses, and adapting to them.

Longmire’s blog deals with DTOs from a high-level intelligence perspective while Borderland Beat is street-level, with coverage of the increasingly deranged and escalating violence in the border towns where beheaded, tortured bodies, sometimes dozens of them, are routinely found on the streets in the morning.

Lest you think she’s exaggerating, the violence is already in the United States, as this video shows.
