(Sue’s post on Susan Sarandon got me remembering)
Check these photos I took at an anti-war protest in March 2003 in Hollywood. It was an impromptu demo. Eddie Vedder, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins spoke on the sidewalk in front of the CNN building. I was pushing the portable sound system, which is why I got so close. (Polizeros was just starting then and I got about 5,000 hits off Eddie Vedder’s photo in a couple of days!)
We need to bring back this spirit of anti-war protest.
I thought that you thought the antiwar movement sucked back then, too?
Not at all. I helped organize some huge protests. For a while it was amazing. But the wars didn’t end, Bush left office and it was obvious many protesters were more anti-Bush than anti-war, the hidden agendas of the groups behind the mass organizations became apparent to me, and things have mostly fizzled now.
Ah, I see. I’m going to an antiwar rally in Philly on the 16th. Hopefully we’ll have more than the 50 or so people who showed up in November 2009 to protest the announcement of the escalation in Afghanistan.
