Mayor Bloomberg strongly defends the Ground Zero mosque while Obama, Harry Reid, Howard Dean and other Democratic ‘leaders’ remain mute or attack it. Yet again, Democratic leadership shows itself to be both gutless and complicit with the far right.
Islam did not attack the World Trade Center — Al-Qaeda did. To implicate all of Islam for the actions of a few who twisted a great religion is unfair and un-American. Today we are not at war with Islam — we are at war with Al-Qaeda and other extremists who hate freedom.
The members of our military are men and women at arms — battling for hearts and minds. And their greatest weapon in that fight is the strength of our American values, which have always inspired people around the world. But if we do not practice here at home what we preach abroad — if we do not lead by example – we undermine our soldiers. We undermine our foreign policy objectives. And we undermine our national security.
Tell me again what the Democratic Party stands for? Because Bloomberg’s speech should have been made by Democrats, lots of them.
Bloomberg is definitely demonstrating his independence here. I wrote on this issue and how it’s affecting the NY gubernatorial election at CAIVN today. Summary: Republicans are strongly against the project, the Green and Libertarian support it on constitutional grounds.

Well, Keith Olbermann was talking to Howard Dean about this the other day and Dean makes a valid point – This is a discussion that the people of that area need to have. The rest of the world needs to butt out and let the folks who have honest concerns (not the wingnuts) and the people wanting to build the community center have a rational discussion about it.
Maybe what the dems need to be doing is specifically calling out the Newts and Rand Paul etc and tell them this is none of their business and the world does not want or need their opinion. That this is a local issue that the folks of Manhattan need to work out on their own. Rand’s own father is talking sense on this one and he should listen to him.
To be perfectly honest with you, I could give no more a flying fig about “9/11”, the WTC, New York City or any stupid church, synagogue or mosque to be built there than I do the strip joints, gay bars and dope dens of the surrounding neighborhood. Everyone – Left, Right and Seemingly Reasonable – flaying this dead horse – “9/11” – has drank the kool-aid and doesn’t give a shit about what really happened on “9/11”, and I don’t give a shit either.
They all bow down to the same damned dog…
