Mubarak and senior military ordered protesters killed. Low level army refused

Robert Fisk on The Independent

Mubarak ordered the Egyptian Third Army to crush the demonstrators in Tahrir Square with their tanks after flying F-16 fighter bombers at low level over the protesters.

Many of the senior tank commanders could be seen tearing off their headsets – over which they had received the fatal orders – [...]

A cautionary note on Egypt

Jim Kunstler says the revolts are fueled by increasing popularion size, decreasing resources (including food) and mismanagement of contraction by governments. Further, people were probably jubilant in the early days of the French Revolution but it ended with the Reign or Terror and installation of a new monarch.

We need non-violent revolution here too

To paraphrase Gandhi, “What do you think about democracy in America?” “I think it would be a good idea.”

Washington’s Blog is eloquent in two detailed posts about why Americans need to Walk Like an Egyptian too. We’ve been hoodwinked. We’ve been bamboozled. It needs to change. Non-violent civil disobedience, especially in the form of [...]

Gosh, I’m just [...]

For me and my prison friends, Egypt is personal

Maajid Nawaz, co-founder and executive director of Quilliam.

I’ve been dragged through the dungeons of Egypt’s underground state security headquarters myself. The infamous al-Gihaz sits in the middle of Cairo and inspires fear in all who walk past. Anyone taken into al-Gihaz is immediately blindfolded, numbered and then has to listen as colleagues are tortured, [...]

Egypt, and the reaction of the US and Israel

Wouldn’t it be nice if the U.S. could figure out whether it prefers the democracy it’s always talking about publicly or the “stability of dictatorships” it has always funded with military aid, though?

The US (and Israel) are totally in favor of democracy except when they aren’t. In fact, Israel just said “I’m not sure [...]
