New York Beauty quilts. San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles

q4

New York Beauty quilts are a style of quilt with broken circles and rays. They resemble the motif of the Statue of Liberty and Chrysler Building, hence the name.  Not only are they gorgeous, they are technically difficult to sew. Most of the quilts shown here were done by unknown persons from 1870-1940.

We are pleased to announce a new exhibition for Summer 2013. Collecting New York Beauty Quilts: Bill Volckening’s Passion focuses on the evolution of a unique quilt pattern—New York Beauty—and shows its many variations and modifications throughout the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries. Collecting New York Beauty Quilts traces the life story of an extraordinary American quilt pattern and a collector’s singular pursuit and fascinating research surrounding quilts made with this complex and graphic design.
