Hydroelectric power is biggest source of renewable energy

Renewable energy is still a small part of total power generated in the US. Solar is less than 1 percent. Wind is almost 4 percent. Hydroelectric power is the biggest, at 8 percent. Big hydroelectric dams are controversial because of the immense environmental damage they do. Many think they can cause earthquakes too. The State of California doesn’t consider big hydro to be renewable energy but does include small hydro.

Renewable Energy Worlds lists the top ten states for installed renewable energy. The totals include all forms of hydropower.

The number one state for renewable energy is … Washington. California is second.
