Handsome Dick Manitoba interviewed Darlene Love of the Crystals “He’s a Rebel” fame on his Sirius radio show recently. After the Crystals, she was much sought after for session work.
She was thrilled when she got to work with Elvis, and said he loved Black gospel. In fact, before he was famous, he told her he used to stand at windows outside Black churches in the South so he could hear them sing. He didn’t go in because he assumed they wouldn’t allow it. She told him he would have been welcome in their churches even if she couldn’t have gone into his but he didn’t know that, and that’s just how things were then.
