In an urban area where diesel buses began operating in 1940, the MTA now has 2,221 buses powered by compressed natural gas, as well as one electric bus and six gasoline-electric hybrids.
They now have zero buses that run on diesel, sharply reducing GHG emissions and particulates in the air and are the first major city in the US to operate a bus system entirely on alt fuel.
The buses do cost more but lower fuel expenses offset this somewhat. MTA also has installed solar panels at maintenance facilities.
