With all the drama around General McChrystal’s resignation, the media missed the real story in the explosive Rolling Stone article:

“…[W]e’re f****ing losing this thing.” –Staff Sergeant Kennith Hicks

Administration officials are frantically trying to reassure Congress and the American people that we’re making “progress” in Afghanistan, but the Rolling Stone article makes it clear that McChrystal’s inner circle knew better. As one of his senior aides said, “If Americans pulled back and started paying attention to this war, it would become even less popular.”

We spend $1 billion a year fighting 100 al Qaeda members in Afghanistan. What could account for such insanity?

Country Joe’s lyrics about the Vietnam War might give a hint.

Well, come on Wall Street, don’t move slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go.
There’s plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of the trade,
Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.

His website has a page with new lyrics for Fixin’ to Die that fans have sent it. Here’s one.

Come on generals, stay the course
knock those terrorists out with force
we really gave ’em a terrible smack
when we went in and trashed Saddam’s I-rack
you know that peace can only be won
when we’ve blown ’em all to kingdom come

Come on Wall Street don’t be slow
oil is up ’cause supply is low
there’s plenty good money to be made
by supplying the army with tools of the trade
let’s hope and pray that if they drop the bomb
they drop it on Tehran

I don’t want bombs dropped on anyone, especially not civilians, but you get the idea. The best way to insure peace in the Middle East – now work with me on this, all you politicians and generals – is to stop fighting and bring the troops home.
