Energy shortages worldwide

Energyshortage has a clickable map with info on short term and long term energy shortages worldwide, with detailed blog posts too.

The Oil Drum has more, especially about India, where a lack of monsoon rain for hydroelectric power has led to massive power shortages. This also effects the US, as the high tech hub of Bangalore, where much work is out-sourced to, is also having power problems.

India needs vastly more power. They will probably uses coal. Australia is exporting vast amounts of coal to pay for their oil imports.

What’s needed for a worldwide solution is renewable energy that is cost-competitive with coal. Nuclear power is indeed cheap once built. But it’s very expensive to build and takes years. Plus there’s the obvious disposal problem.

As a planet, we must find ways to create cheap renewable energy on a mass scale.
