Steve Clemons of Washington Note has been traveling in China, and thinks BYD’s E6 could clobber other automakers in the US market. It’ll sell for $22,000 and is a great car, he says.

And it’s an electric vehicle.

The E6, which is targeted in part for California and plans to launch there in 2011, is fully electric — and has a 400 km/250 mile range and goes up to 160 km/100 miles per hour.

I drove one yesterday, and it’s a great vehicle.

Warren Buffett thinks the same — and is now in the process of buying 10% of the company.

It can reach a 80% charge in 15 minutes, which makes it seriously practical too.

  1. Wow! A 250 mile range makes it practical for rural areas. (It’s 56 miles round trip to our nearest shopping area, 160 miles RT to the nearest mall.) And 15 minutes for an 80% charge (200 mile range) makes it reasonable for road trips.

Meanwhile, Detroit was asleep at the switch…
