Networks may call election before some polls close

“There’s no way to get around it,” CBS News senior vp Paul Friedman said. “If one man gets 270 electoral votes before the West Coast polls are closed, we’re not going to pretend (he doesn’t).”

Sounds like the networks think it’ll be a short night, at least for president. The Senate and House races may take much longer to decide.

Fungus discovered that makes biodiesel naturally

The fungus can even make these diesel compounds from cellulose, which would make it a better source of biofuel than anything we use at the moment.”

Neil Young’s ‘59 Lincoln electric hybrid conversion

CNet

The engine is a 150-kilowatt electric motor that produces the equivalent of 500 horsepower. The car cruises at 80 mph and can reach speeds of 160 mph, Goodwin said. “It’s essentially like a train. We use one motor to push it down the road, with a range of 80 to 100 miles.” A generator, that produces 75 kilowatts, comes on automatically to power a rotary engine that runs on compressed natural gas and refuels the batteries.

Wil B. It’s a Brighter Day

Clifford J. Tasner (one of the Billionaires) links to Wil B’s optimistic “It’s a Brighter Day.” from HuffPo.

Yes, better days are almost here. Get out and vote if you haven’t already.

I met Wil B some years back at an antiwar meeting in L.A. He said he was going to try hip hop and if it didn’t work, well, it was back to the factory. Happily, he’s been performing and touring ever since, and always with a progressive message. It’s been great watching his music career take off and grow.

Jinglemail for Chinese factories

Factories are closing in China at an alarming rate. Owners are disappearing, leaving workers owed months of back pay. By the end of the year, over 100,000 factories will have closed.

The Chinese bubble has popped. The possibility of major social unrest is obvious.

(”Jinglemail” is the term coined for US homeowners who abandon their house and mail the keys to the bank.)

Why Sue will be happy when the election is over

I generally wake up before Sue does. So, by the time she’s up and about, I’m already hyper-caffeinated and tend to greet her with a torrent of election news and poll results.

Chavez would expropriate banks in crisis

“If something similar comes to pass in Venezuela, you should not have the slightest doubt that I won’t give a penny to the banks - I’ll expropriate them,” said Mr Chavez.

But then Venezuela would have to pump billions into the banks to keep them from collapsing. So how is this different from bailing them out?

He added however, that so far the global banking crisis has not affected Venezuela’s economy.

The price of oil has dropped substantially because of the credit crisis and this has already directly affected Venezuela who gets the bulk of their revenue from oil.

I think Chavez needs to take a refresher course in Economics 101.

Obama’s tech policy and plans

Obama wants to “employ technology to solve our most pressing problems.” This includes broadband for all, a modern communications infrastructure, online access to governmental data with feedback and comments from citizens, major R&D for cleantech and renewable energy, more science in schools, and much more.

After eight years of the BushCo Dark Ages, we are, at long last, emerging into the light again. We will have a president who believes in science, imagine that.

GMail and backing up online email

Every now and then, GMail gets weird, and insists I re-login using an almost unreadable captcha. A couple of times I said my account was suspended but then presented a login with no captcha which worked fine. Which is more than a bit unnerving.

So, I wondered, how can I back up Gmail? It’d be nice to have a backup system in case GMail is down or I get locked out. As it turns out, it was easy. I imported all my addresses and email from GMail into Yahoo Mail then told GMail to forward all email to Yahoo, keeping a copy on Gmail. Thus, I now have two email systems, that with a little maintenance each week, will be in sync. Backups are always a good idea anyway.
