Um, what happened to the antiwar movement?

Up until now there have been at least two major nationwide demonstrations against the Iraq War each year since it began, a mass mobilization in March on the anniversary of the war and another one in the fall. But this fall there’s nothing. ANSWER hasn’t called one, neither has United for Peace. Sure, the war isn’t in the news as much and the presidential campaigns are vampiring energy out of progressive movements. But I also think the antiwar movement is a bit out of ideas at the moment. We got millions in the streets for some of the protests, but those numbers have steadily dwindled even as mainstream opposition to the war has grown. Why is that? That’s the question that needs to be answered.

California needs the water bond proposition to pass

So says the Palm Springs CA Desert Sun, urging that legislators put the bill on the ballot by the tomorrow’s deadline.

Schwarzenegger and Sen. Dianne Feinstein both support it. It needs to pass. Given the ongoing California budget train wreck, let’s hope voters ok it - assuming it’s on the ballot.

And, ahem, maybe Palm Springs could help by not fostering a culture of let’s build more golf courses in deserts and then by shutting down many of their existing courses. Using huge amounts of water for golf courses in deserts as the water table drops alarmingly will soon be looked at as the irresponsible, near criminal act that it is.

Bush stealth attempt to pardon himself and cronies against war crimes

It’s hidden in a bill that has just passed the House and is expected to pass the Senate. As usual, the Democrats are passive and compliant, allowing and enabling this obscenity through with no protest.

Tip: The Big Picture personal blog.

Update: Apparently this bill was in 2007. Anyone know if it passed?

McCain getting stomped on homes issue

It now appears McCain has twelve homes. Count ‘em, twelve.

From USA Today
:

McCain, who has portrayed Obama as an elitist, is the son and grandson of admirals. The Associated Press estimates his wife, a beer heiress, is worth $100 million. Obama was raised by a single mother who relied at times on food stamps, and went to top schools on scholarships and loans.

Time: “The McCain campaign’s constant invocation of the candidate’s POW past is weird bordering on irrational” and yes, his spokesperson tried to invoke McCain being a POW to deflect criticism for not knowing how many homes he owns.

I read somewhere (can’t find the link now) that Obama has deliberately delayed announcing his VP selection because he doesn’t want distract from the media frenzy over McCain’s homes.

Denver police are twitchy and ill-prepared for DNC protests

Denver police have gone so far as to circulate a memo to commissioned officers warning against possible nefarious DNC protest activity like camping and carrying maps. Bicycles too.

Lordy, they do seem clueless, don’t they? And looking for trouble in all the wrong places too.

Let’s enjoy these few remaining days of quiet

The conventions are almost upon us.  Soon the sounds of constant cannon fire will fill the air, increasing steadily until the November election. We require that our presidential candidates show their toughness  by attacking each other. We won’t be disappointed.

Oh yes, Obama is plenty tough enough.
