We recently moved to the S.F. pennisula and I just discovered we are now living 2 miles from the San Andreas fault. Yikes.

I cannot believe you weren’t aware of that before hand.
Could be worse – you could be on the Oregon/Washington/BC coast.
Actually in some cases the most stable ground is close to the fault. Worse places, like bay infill, are much farther from the fault, but quiver and cause much more damage.
We *knew* of course, that the SA was somewhere in the vicinity. But we *imagined* that we could not actually see it from our front porch.
