Warren Buffett: “long, deep” U.S. recession

Calculated Risk translates legendary investor Warren Buffett’s comments from Spiegel Online.

The bankers brewed a poisoned drink, and then had to drink it themselves. Usually they prefer to sell the poison to others (said sarcastically).

270 illegal immigrants sent to prison

This is a major escalation of tactics by the Bush Administration, jailing them first, then deportation, rather than just deportation.

Charges may be filed against the company who hired them. We’ll see if the company owners go to prison too.

Obama favors class-based affirmative action

Twice during the primary campaign, Obama has been asked by George Stephanopoulos, who handled a review of affirmative action policies for President Clinton, whether or not he believed his own fairly privileged daughters deserve affirmative action preferences in college. Both times he answered no.

Obama then went further to say that low income and working class people of all colours deserve special consideration.

Not only does this make excellent sense, it would also have the desirable side effect of introducing the discussion of class into the political mainstream instead of maintaining the current bizarre fiction that class somehow doesn’t exist in the US.

Gas Buddy price map

Gas Buddy makes it easy to see how expensive gas is in your area as compared to elsewhere. We just moved from the only state that is entirely red, Connecticut, which thus has the highest prices in the contiguous US. This is in part due to pipeline and transportation costs but mostly because of the extremely high tax on gas there.

Diesel is now $5 a gallon in some parts of the country. Our second car is now en route via a car carrier.  Most of the truckers doing the actual hauling are independents getting a flat rate for hauling a car and have to pay for diesel themselves. These high gas prices are killing them and their profit margins.

An alternative to $4 a gallon gas

The proposed California High Speed Rail would go 220 mph and would, among other things, make travel from SF to LA easy and quick - faster than by plane, as transit time to the train terminals would be quicker than getting in and through the airports.

Scathing response from all sides on Clinton RFK assassination comment

Keith Olbermann says it all, detailing Clinton’s repeated and despicable attempts to bring up the possibility of assassination of Obama.

A senator — a politician — a person — who can let hang in mid-air the prospect that she might just be sticking around in part, just in case the other guy gets shot — has no business being, and no capacity to be, the President of the United States.

Andrew Sullivan, AmericaBlog, DailyKos, and Huffington Post have compendiums of outraged comments from all over the political spectrum at her comments.

I’m beginning to understand why the Right detested the Bill and Hillary so much. Maybe they saw all along who the Clintons really were. Now we all see it.
