Open national antiwar conference

On behalf of the Coordinating Committee of the National Assembly to End the Iraq War and Occupation, we are pleased to announce an Open National Conference to Stop the War in Iraq and Bring the Troops Home Now, scheduled for Cleveland, Ohio, June 28-29, 2008. The purpose of the conference is to to place on the agenda of the entire U.S. antiwar movement a proposal for the largest possible united mass mobilization(s) in the future to stop the Iraq War and end the occupation

This seems to be a new group, has a long list of endorsers, many from United for Peace and allied groups, don’t see any from ANSWER et al.

Yes, the antiwar movement needs to unite into a mass coalition for a massive mobilization. We don’t have to agree on everything (and probably won’t!) but hey, imagine a day with thousands of protests, teach-ins, flash mobs, demonstrations, podcasts, lobbying of Congress, videos on YouTube, speaking to churches and community groups - all with the aim of ending the war. Let every group do what it does best with the sole theme being Bring the Troops Home Now.

HRC

She’s behind. Make no mistake. If she lose either Texas or Ohio, this thing is done.”

– James Carville, quoted by the Orlando Sentinel, on Sen. Hillary Clinton’s prospects.

Meanwhile the Hillary Denial Syndrome continues, as she says all these defeats were expected and are just part of the grand master plan.

March 19 Iraq War blogswarm

March 19 Iraq War blogswarm

This blogswarm will promote blog postings opposing the war in Iraq and calling for a full withdrawal of foreign occupying forces in Iraq. Five years of an illegal and catastrophic war is five years too many. On the March 19 anniversary of the conquest of Iraq by the Bush Administration, there needs to be a loud volume of voices countering the pro-war propaganda from far too many politicians and corporate media outlets.

NBC on wave and tidal power

< Yet another renewable energy technology is steadily going mainstream. Wave and tidal power is both zero carbon emission and completely predictable as to when the power generation will occur. The more ways we have to create clean power, the better.

February in New England

ice storm
This is the time of year in New England when it becomes clear the natural order has been upset and that winter will, in fact, never end.

Growing up in Connecticut as a kid, February was usually snowy and cold. Now with climate change and the somewhat warmer winters, the snow has been replaced by an exciting variety of rain, freezing rain, sleet, slush and, oh yeah, some snow too. Freezing rain is the worst as it takes down trees and power lines. Online traffic maps here helpfully note downed trees on major roads.

The perky euphemism that forecasters use for this wretched weather is “wintry mix.” Sounds positively festive doesn’t it?

Well, at least the drought is over. The aquifers are refilling and Spring really will be here soon.

The bogus economic stimulus tax rebate

shell game
You didn’t think the government was going to give us $600 each, did you? Not hardly. Instead, the amount credited to your 2007 taxes will be added on to your 2008 taxes. Or some weaselly variant thereof.

The [unusually complicated, intelligible only to tax lawyers]wording of the bill appears to indicate that if, for example, you qualified for a $1,200 rebate based on 2007, but in 2008 you earned more income and your credit got phased out because of AGI limitations, you would owe that money back. Ouch!
