Running out of coal?

We may be entering a period of peak coal, just like we are with peak oil. Which will be none to soon for this highly polluting and destructive abomination of an energy source, you ask me.

Britain is reputed to be sitting on over 300 years of coal.

But Britain managed to shoot herself in the leg as far as coal goes by completely destroying the industry. Or better, Thatcher managed to shoot Britain in the leg.
Anyhoo, it will be interesting to see what will happen if both of those hellish types of fossil fuel start experiencing heavy supply shortages.

The UK simply moved its coal source from the home to cheaper imported coal, exploiting cheap foriegn labour. If it becomes economically viable, the coal is still there in the ground and some wee capitalist will be looking at ways to get it out on the cheap.
