I am not all that familiar with US politics, but I’ll have to say that Sullivan raises an interesting point about Machiavellism.
Many politicos seem to think political skill consists in political machismo. Shouting at your opponents, making flamboyant speeches and being a tough guy (on crime, on immigrants, on terror, on drugs etc). Now, while many may fall for this kind of crap, in the long run, the only sustainable and effective political strategy is playing your opponents against each other, making unseen maneuvers, in short, being a political puppet master.
The sad thing is that many on the left employ similar tactics to said cock wavers. I think I will make a post about Gramsci and hegemony some time soon.
