And the winner is..

Consumer Reports rated corporate coffee on price and taste. Their winner - McDonalds, who beat the “burnt and bitter” taste of Starbucks.

Indeed, why does Starbucks pride themselves on burning their beans? As a home roaster, I’ve learned that a lighter roast preserves the flavor of the bean, and the very dark roast just gives the taste of the burn.

Nemesis. The Last Days of the American Republic

Chalmers Johnson on his new book

We Americans are on the brink of losing our democracy for the sake of keeping our empire. Once a nation starts down that path, the dynamics that apply to all empires come into play - isolation, overstretch, the uniting of local and global forces opposed to imperialism, and in the end bankruptcy.

It’s evident that Nemesis - in Greek mythology the goddess of vengeance, the punisher of hubris and arrogance - is already a visitor in the United States, simply biding her time before she makes her presence known.

We can turn this around. And we must. So let’s do it.

Change the system, not the climate

What is required is the rapid, far-reaching reorganisation of industry, energy, transport and mass consumption patterns, and the massive transfer of clean technology to the Third World. This is simply not possible under capitalism.

This is not because capitalists are neccessarily evil. It’s because capitalism by nature rewards short-term gain at the expense of long-term costs. And that’s precisely what has to change if we want to stop global warming from happening. We need to emphasize the long-term view and what’s best for all.

WordPress tips

Most the hits on a WordPress blog (or any blog) are on the home page. This requires database activity and processor time. To speed things up, install the free wp-cache plug-in.

It saves requested pages to disk so the next time someone requests the page they get the saved version. thus eliminating much processor and database usage. It is way easy to install. Make wp-config writeable by the server (chmod 777), copy the files in, activate and that’s it. It refreshs pages every hour by default and cleans up expired pages. A true gem of a program.

Also, you might want to delete this line in your template.

“<?php wp_get_archives(’type=monthly&format=link’); ?>”

Then Blue Coat won’t descend upon your site slurping down every page it can find and max out your bandwidth. More on this on my tech blog.

Both tips from the always amazing and helpful Jamie at Intoxination. Go read his blog now.
