Posada indicted

For lying, not for terrorism. And he could still walk. But this is still a welcome development, as it’s the first indictment inside the US for this self-admitted terrorist.

Obama backs liquefied coal

And you thought Obama was an liberal enviro, right? But here he is, backing coal, about the most greenhouse-gas-producing, icecap-melting, and polluting way to make energy there is - all the while making unctuous noises about wanting to hug trees and promote biofuels. Yuck.

Just before Clinton was elected president in 1992 a prescient friend said to me, Bill Clinton is no liberal. The same is unquestionably true of Obama. He’s a corporate and big business friendly politico who, just like Clinton, popped out of nowhere with hidden, powerful backing in high places. His agenda is whatever pleases corporate America, with seriously working to reverse climate change, rather than just the occasional greenwash, not on the list.

We need real solutions for global warming, rather than more politicians who do photo ops hugging trees then favor planet-destroying energy schemes.

Robert Anton Wilson passes

Illuminatus Trilogy

Best known for the Illuminatus Trilogy, author Robert Anton Wilson passed yesterday. I knew him a bit some years ago. He was brilliant, intellectually fearless, hugely curious, funny, and political. I liked him quite a lot. You may not have heard of him but his influence pops up in the oddest of places, often quite unexpected. His genius was in getting people to view things in ways that had never occurred to them before.

I usually do several posts at Polizeros just after midnight. Often, in a little tribute to him, one post will be at at 00:23, 23 being a special RAW number.

That’s what I mean about his influence popping up unexpectedly! And the 23 tradition will continue here at Polizeros. The world is a better place for his having been here.

From RU Sirius

Robert Anton Wilson taught us all that “the universe contains a maybe.” So maybe there is an afterlife, and maybe Bob’s consciousness is hovering around all of us who were touched by his words and his presence all these years. And if that’s the case, I’m sure he’d like to see you do something strange and irreverent — and yet beautiful –- in his honor.

Gates Foundation to rethink investments

Two days after the LA Times ran two articles questioning why the Gates Foundation invests in companies that “contravene its good works,” the foundation announced it will review its investments with an eye towards social responsibility.

Excellent. If the 800 pound gorilla of charitable foundations focuses on socially responsible investing, then it sets an example for others. That the Gates Foundation responded so quickly to the Times articles is commendable. Let’s hope they move decisively to socially responsible investing. The article notes that other major foundations are also planning the same type of reviews.

During the end days of apartheid in South Africa, many foundations and funds refused to invest in South African companies, something which unquestionably put pressure on their government to change.
