Smoke in the air

The Day Fire, named because it started on Labor Day, is about 10-15 miles away from us. It doubled, maybe tripled, in size today due to Santa Ana winds and it now threatening Ojai. The air where we are is noticeably smoky, so it must be choking in Ojai…

This is a bad one.

Larry Sonsini

Larry Sonsini, uber-lawyer to Silicon Valley tech firms, appears enmeshed in both the backdated options and HP spying scandals.

Bizarrely, although not a member of the HP board, he chaired their emergency meeting last week, even though he’d advised HP “not to worry about getting personal phone records without permission”

His firm also advised half the companies under investigation for backdating options.

HP execs and Sonsini have been requested to testify at a House hearing. HP execs may refuse to testify, invoking their Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination, something which might be advisable legally, but which can not help but be a PR disaster for the company, “The HP Way”?

Bush battered, where’s the movement?

Dubya and the neocon agenda have faced a multitude of setbacks recently, many engineered by their own party. The Bolton nomination was refused, Republicans are defying Bush on his all-torture-all-the-time agenda. The Afghanistan and Iraq wars have turning into defeats, and the Lebanon invasion backfired badly.

Seems like this would be the time for the movement to redouble its efforts. When the enemy is weakening, that’s the time to attack even harder, right? So, where’s the antiwar movement? Snoozing mostly, it seems. Maybe this is just a lull, or maybe too many are doing nothing hoping the Democrats take the House in November. Yeah, like that’ll help end the wars.

Protest in the streets does help. It does sway opinion. The ANSWER Coalition has called for nationwide antiwar protests on October 28, just before the elections. Don’t make the mistake of thinking a Democratic House will end the wars (or avoid new ones, like Iran.) Get involved now.

Free the Cuban Five

March to White House. Sat. Sept.23

The Cuban Five received grotesquely long sentences for infiltrating right wing Cuban exile groups. They did not infiltrate or spy on the US government, only on private groups who have boasted of committing violent crimes in Cuba.

The trial was Orwellian. The government said they were ’spying’ because they took photos of planes taking off from a military base (they wanted to see if any of the planes were private, and thus paramilitary.) However, they took the photos on a platform outside the base specially designed for people to take photos of the base! For defending their own country against right wing thugs (who work hand-in-hand) with allies in the US government, some of them received life sentence.

Next Saturday, there will be a nationally coordinated march and rally in DC to demand they be freed. This miscarriage of justice needs to be reversed.
