Warren Jeffs and polygamy

Polygamist Mormon fundamentalist sects are making nationwide headlines lately with the arrest of Warren Jeffs. For a detailed explanation of them, read
Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by Jon Krakauer.

This is an unsettling book. The central topic is the brutal murder of a Mormon wife and her baby by her husband’s brothers, who claimed God told them to do it. Krakauer explores these bizarre sects in detail, as well as the history of the LDS.

I find it nearly impossible to believe that such lunatic Taliban-like cults could openly exist and thrive in Utah without at least tacit support from mainstream Mormons.

Slow weekend, war coming?

With the long holiday weekend almost upon us, news will seemingly slow down. But beneath the surface, things are churning. Like John Robb, I too believe the neocons will invade Iran. Let’s see, they’ve invaded three countries (Afghanistan, Iraq, and Lebanon) so far, have lost or are losing their wars for plunder in all three, turned former allies into adversaries, are hemorrhaging support at home - so, if one is mentally unbalanced, clearly then, the only option is to do it all again hoping for a different outcome this time. They have gone quite insane, haven’t they?

So let’s enjoy these few days of rest. The firestorms will be here soon enough.

Posting from Ubuntu

This post was written and posted using the free Ubuntu CD . Boot off the CD, and you have a working version of Ubuntu with no installation needed. After a few hours playing with Ubuntu, I’m impressed. It’s highly configurable, fun, comes with lots of software. My Ubuntu laptop arrives in a week or so, and I’m already in geek heaven.

However, it’s not just for geeks. It’s a full GUI, easy to use, and there’s lots of online forums and sites to help out newbies. Wheee…

And it’s all free.
