Pentagon not happy with Bush Iran plans

Seymour Hersh, The New Yorker

Inside the Pentagon, senior commanders have increasingly challenged the President’s plans, according to active-duty and retired officers and officials. The generals and admirals have told the Administration that the bombing campaign will probably not succeed in destroying Iran’s nuclear program. They have also warned that an attack could lead to serious economic, political, and military consequences for the United States.

A crucial issue in the military’s dissent, the officers said, is the fact that American and European intelligence agencies have not found specific evidence of clandestine activities or hidden facilities.

Sounds like the neocons, just like they did with Iraq, have been making shit up so they can invade.

A retired four-star general, who ran a major command, said, “The system is starting to sense the end of the road, and they don’t want to be condemned by history. They want to be able to say, ‘We stood up.'”

A retired American diplomat, who has experience in the Gulf, confirmed that the Qatari government is “very scared of what America will do” in Iran, and â┚¬Å“scared to deathâ┚¬Â about what Iran would do in response. Iran’s message to the oil-producing Gulf states, the retired diplomat said, has been that it will respond, and “you are on the wrong side of history.”

  1. It sure would be nice if they would “stand up” to the “doctrine” of preventive (i.e., illegal) war, instead of only to the idea of going to war without having found “clandestine activities or hidden facilities,” or, even more accurately, the idea of going to war they might lose.

  2. Imperialism always wants to control the world and its precious resources, at the moment, America is the dominant imperial power but for how much longer? History tells us that the collapse of an empire can be fast and can also be brutal. Do we the people sit back and welcome a new empire, start to take new sides and start the slaughter all over again? Or do we really start to dismantle the whole state system and build our societies on self organised commuities working with mutual aid in federation with all other communities, seeing to the needs of all our people rather than the desire and greed of shareholders, fundamentalists and power freaks? If we do not read our history we will repeat the horrors of the past and who do we blame, how do we explain it to our grandchildren?
