Two to be charged in Northern Ireland McCartney murder

The McCartney family’s campaign has always maintained that a wider group of people were involved in the murder and subsequent cover-up.

McCartney was brutally killed in a pub fight by suspected IRA members (the fight had nothing to do with politics.) The case got international headlines when his five sisters met with President Bush in DC a few months back.

Gnomedex 5.0

Chris Pirillo of Lockergnome is sponsoring Gnomedex in Seattle the end of the month. It will be podcasting and blog heaven, with all the players (Adam Curry, Dave Winer and many more) in attendance. Registrations are limited to 300. Chris says he will personally greet every attendee, and he’s already responded quickly and helpfully to my emails about the event. It looks to be a friendly, way informative conference that will draw huge press interest as well as giving the blogging/podcast world opportunity to network and schmooze.

And they get it, “With unlimited Wi-Fi and Power Strips” in the conference hall!

Over 150 bloggers so far have signed up. Yahoo, Google, and Wiley are among the sponsors. I’ll be there, and can you imagine the combined force of 150 bloggers reporting on the event real time on their blogs! Plus the conference will focus on the currently white-hot topic of podcasting.

From  Robert Scoble who works at Microsoft (title: technical evangelist) where he has a semi-autonomous and widely read blog.

Gnomedex might be small in size, but I’ll bet it gets more blogging than most “big” conferences. Why? Cause there’s a lot of press showing up and because Chris is so influential.

I wonder what Microsoft is gonna announce on stage, though? Hey, Bill Gates, are we gonna show off anything cool at Gnomedex? Or are we gonna let Steve Jobs (er, Adam Curry) and Eric Schmidt have all the fun in our backyard?

Scoble also reports that Google is sponsoring a party too!

Microsoft to make XML the default in Office

Word, Excel, and Powerpoint will get a new file format all based on XML.

The extensions will change from .DOC, .XLS, .PPT to .DOCX, .XLSX, .PPTX.

The new file format is actually enclosed in a ZIP file. Change the extension name to .ZIP and you’ll be able to double-click and get access to all the pieces of the new format.

The new file format will be usable on existing versions of Office.

From Scoble

In my mind Office was always associated with format lock-in and a closed, proprietary approach.

But now I can see EVERYTHING inside the new files. Wow.

Gartner

Changing the file formats is a big risk for Microsoft and indicates that Office 12 will be the most significant release of Office since 1997.

Arnold targets global warming

Sometimes Schwarzenegger can be quite surprising.

Declaring climate change to be an indisputable threat, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiled a plan to combat global warming by setting goals for reducing California’s emissions of greenhouse gases.

“Today, California will be a leader in the fight against global warming,” Schwarzenegger told a United Nations conference on the environment on Wednesday.

“I say the debate is over. We know the science, we see the threat and we know the time for action is now,” he said.

Your first task here Mr Governor is - convince President Bush too!

PS, on too many other issues, he’s reactionary
