Thought for the day

“I asked a man in prison once how he happened to be there and he said he had stolen a pair of shoes. I told him if he had stolen a railroad he would be a United States Senator.”

Venezuela asks U.S. to extradite Posada over bombing

Venezuela asked the United States on Friday to extradite a Cuban exile and former CIA collaborator for his suspected involvement in the downing of a Cuban airliner in a case that tests the U.S. commitment to combat all forms of terrorism.

Luis Posada Carriles, who has Venezuelan citizenship, has applied for asylum in the United States, according to his lawyer, but U.S. officials say they do not know the fugitive’s whereabouts.

Uh huh, I believe them, don’t you?

The Venezuelan Embassy in Washington delivered a letter requesting the Bush administration hunt down the 77-year-old, and deport him to face trial for a 1976 airliner bombing that killed 73 people. He was arrested in Venezuela more than 20 years ago but escaped from prison without being convicted.

By any measurement, Posada is a terrorist, yet the Bushies pretend they don’t know where he is and seem intent on giving him asylum in the US. However the increasing opposition to this thug may force them to do otherwise. Let’s keep the pressure on.

GE goes Green

Yet another wonderful rant by Bruce Sterling from the Viridian Design, a movement, focused on global warming. The triple parens are his comments.

“GE to invest more in green technology”
(((”GE defects to Greenhouse believers, Exxon-Mobil doomed”)))

“WASHINGTON (AFP) May 09, 2005
“General Electric Co. announced plans Monday to  double its investment in ‘cleaner technologies’ for energy, transportation and other areas in a major  new environmental initiative.

(((Have a look at the way GE is slanting this. It’s kind of brilliant, actually.  Look how GE CEO J. Immelt actually transmutes, right on the web, into a green silhouette!  Boy did that make me happy.)))

(((Meanwhile, Exxon-Mobil attempts to cover their massively profiteering while still uttering not a word about climate change:)))

”GE, the world’s biggest company in terms of market capitalization, (((ha ha ha, it’s all downhill from here, tra la la))) called the announcement  an ‘initiative to aggressively bring to market  new technologies that will help customers meet pressing environmental challenges.”

(((You know what’s nice about GE?  Unlike, say, Enron, GE can actually execute business plans! For instance, GE now owns Enron’s wind power. You wonder how GE bought all that wind stuff for a song from the wreckage of a cratered company?  Because they’re NOT STUPID at GE, that’s why!)))

The GE initiative will “”include more environmentally friendly technology for wind and solar energy, hybrid locomotives, fuel cells, lower-emission aircraft engines, lighter and stronger materials, efficient lighting and water purification technology.”

GE gets it. When will the White House follow?

Swiss ski resort swaddles glacier to stop melting

A Swiss ski resort Tuesday wrapped up an entire glacier to stop it melting and to protect ski runs.

The WWF environmental group said that “covering up glaciers is not going to solve the problem of global warming.” Only climate protection measures such as cutting back greenhouse gases are useful, it said in a statement.

Podcast split

Winer and Curry fall out.

Blog god Dave Winer, the founder of Podcasting, has fallen out with former MTV-DJ Adam Curry, according to posts at Scripting News.

It appears that Winer has taken deep offence to an interview Curry gave to Wired in which he took much of the credit for the creation of Podcasting.

Although Winer and Curry are often jointly credited with popularising Podcasting, Winer is credited as being the creator of the technology that bought about the medium.

Winer and Curry were previously close, including partaking in joint podcasts. Winer now describes Curry as a “dickhead” and a fading star.

This split had been coming for a while … They are both featured speakers at the upcoming Gnomedex, which will focus on podcasting.
