Oligarchs caught in world’s largest…

Oligarchs caught in world’s largest skimming operation

They’ve stolen millions, maybe hundreds of millions. They operate at the highest levels of finance and business. Observers say the whole thing looks like one big criminal operation, and wonder if the whole system isn’t hopelessly corrupt.

Russia? No, the United States.

The mutual fund industry has become the “world’s largest skimming operation,” said Sen. Peter Fitzgerald (R-Ill.), chairman of the Senate subcommittee on financial management, which held the hearing.

Preliminary results of a new SEC survey of the 88 largest mutual fund families and 34 broker-dealers found that one-quarter of responding broker-dealers engaged in improper trading after the 4 p.m. close.

The unholy trinity of illegal late trading, abusive market timing and the latest self-dealing practices that have recently come to light are matters that affect us all,” testified Stephen Cutler, director of the Security and Exchange Commission’s division of enforcement.

Politics and power

Politics and power

Luis Eduardo Garzon, a media-savvy crazy-like-a-fox leftie, was just elected Mayor of Bogota, Columbia.

Garzon’s triumph also dealt a serious blow to Alvaro Uribe, Colombia’s hawkish, workaholic president, who was still enjoying his political honeymoon when Garzon irreverently stepped into the limelight

<Garzon says the left> “never prepared to govern. The left would discuss everything. The color of a lightbulb was a debate. And when it was time to act, they’d lost the moment. I’m different from that.”

He has a point. Some of the left is conflicted about power. It makes them queasy. Anarchists and Greens in particular tend to view =any= political structure as inherently untrustworthy, fearing it could lead to oppression, other mischief, or, God forbid, someone might give them an order.

However, if you are in politics in a serious way, then power is what you want, so you’d best be prepared to wield it once you get it - otherwise, why be involved in politics at all?

Putin

Putin

The precipitating event to Khodorkovsky’s arrest was his planning to sell his 40% share of his stock in Yuokos to ExxonMobil or ChevronTexaco.

Mikhail Khodorkovsky has resigned as chief executive of Russian oil giant Yukos.

Jailed Russian oil chief resigns and may challenge Putin

The internal battle has broken out into the open in Russia. What has surprised a lot of people, and which really shouldn’t, is that Putin, who came to power during Communism, appears to still be a Socialist at heart, believing the state should control the resources of a country, not private enterprise, and most especially not criminal private enterprise.

And apparently most of the country, sickened by the looting done by the oligarchs, agrees with him.

Dean To Get SEIU Nod

An informed Political Wire reader confirms speculation and says Howard Dean will “definitely” be getting the SEIU endorsement on Thursday.

SEUI has 1.6 million members. This is a huge win for Dean, and a serious defeat for Gephardt.

CBS the craven

CBS the craven

Under pressure from Republican and conservative groups, CBS is expected to announce as early as today that it is canceling its plans to run a two-part mini-series in November deconstructing the Ronald Reagan presidency.

The announcement would perhaps the first time a major broadcast network has ever removed a completed project from its schedule because of political pressure and under the threat of an advertising boycott.

Words fail me but I’ll try anyway. Pathetic, gutless, cowardly come to mind. I’m sure you can think of more.
