Latino media whacking Arnold

Latino media whacking Arnold

“It’s not pretty. Terms like xenophobic, anti-immigrant and unimaginable stupidity are being bandied about.

It’s a little of what is going on in the Spanish language media about Arnold’s vote for Prop. 187 and his links to former Gov. Pete Wilson, who was the chief sponsor of the now overturned initiative.

La Opinion in Los Angeles is the largest Spanish language newspaper in the nation with 472,000 daily readers. An article Tuesday by its political editor, Pilar Marrero, quoted Antonio González, head of the the Southwest Voters Registration Project, as saying “to have Pete Wilson as your spokesman is unimaginable stupidity if you want to project an image as a friend of immigrants.”

Univision, a Spanish language television network, carried a story from the Notimex news service that said Prop. 187 “is considered one of the most retrograde and anti-immigrant measures” ever put in place in California.

Notice the difference in language from the English media. Most of the press in California says Prop. 187 was aimed at illegal immigrants. The word illegal doesn’t pop up in these early Spanish language reports. The Notimex story doesn’t qualify or put sources on its “retrograde” description. That represents a considerable difference in the way the Arnold vote is perceived in the Latino community compared to the Anglo population.”

Israeli Army Razes Home of Suicide Bomber

Twelve people were left homeless after the demolition of the family home of one of two teenagers who blew themselves up on Tuesday in separate suicide bombings”

Using that “logic”, then the family of a U.S. teenager accused of murder would immediately have their homes bulldozed and be made homeless. This is madness, as well as being self-destructive, as such actions only create new people willing to blow themselves up. Although, given the extremism of the Sharon government, this may be their intent, as it’s clear they don’t want peace.

115 confirmed candidates in recall,…

115 confirmed candidates in recall, 247 possible

Bill Clinton is advising Gray Davis now. The press is currently ignoring everyone but Schwarzenneger. There’s 115 confirmed candidates so far with many more coming.  (Update: Warren Buffett is now advising Schwarzenegger)

Ah yes, the coming battle will be apocalyptic in its nastiness. However, little will be accomplished. The next Governor, whoever it is, won’t be able to do much.

Why? Because California’s problems are structural. Huge debt. Shrinking revenue. A crumbling infrastructure. 70 billion dollars that just up and vanished, leaving a smoking crater of a deficit where once was a surplus.

Where did the money go? The candidates need to talk about that. And find real answers. But most won’t.

Russian colleague doubts Kelly committed suicide

A Russian colleague of David Kelly, the British microbiologist who died amid a dispute about whether British authorities falsified intelligence reports on Iraq’s weapons programs, said Tuesday that he doubted Kelly committed suicide.

Kelly, a former UN weapons inspector, was found with his wrist slashed last month, just days after being harshly questioned by a parliamentary committee about his disclosure to the BBC that the British government had “sexed up” intelligence reports on Saddam Hussein’s arsenal.”

Human shields in Iraq face…

Human shields in Iraq face $10,000 fines

“Faith Fippinger is 62 years old. She’s a retired schoolteacher. And the U.S. government wants her to pay at least $10,000 or face up to 12 years of jail time.

She has been accused of entering Iraq in violation of American sanctions in the run-up to Operation Iraqi Freedom. She acted as one of about 300 human shields. “

I doubt Sean Penn will be asked to pay such a fine, even though he was in Baghdad prior to the war. But then he has money, fame, and would LOUDLY attack the government if they pulled that on him. Better to go after a 62 year old retired schoolteacher instead.

Maybe not! She’s beeen loudly protesting this too, and making the rounds of talk shows, getting interviewed, etc.

First Texas, now Colorado

First Texas, now Colorado

Yet ANOTHER state may be trying to grab the political nutcase crown from California.

From Colorado Luis

“Here in Denver, we are not known for goofy ballot propositions, but it looks like that’s about to change. Looks like this guy got enough signatures for his “anti-stress” initiative (he wants the city to study “soothing music” and improved school lunches as stress reducers)”

True, this isn’t nearly on a par with the ongoing Great Texas Democrat Revolt - as yet - but I suspect the Coloradans are just getting started.
