An illegal war

An illegal war

If a war without U.N. support is illegal, and Bush starts the war, then that makes Bush a war criminal.

“The question of whether a war on Iraq is legal under international law will become more pressing if the United States and Britain fail to get a new Security Council resolution.

They say the use of force would be legal but the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan says unilateral action taken outside the Security Council would not conform to the UN charter.

The UN charter allows military action in self-defence and that can include a pre-emptive strike - but only if there is an imminent threat.

Few accept that Iraq poses such a threat. So the question comes back to authorisation by the Security Council.”

Molly Ivins, as usual, gets it right

From my dad comes:

In her column today “Molly Ivins says,  ‘Have you ever seen such amazing arrogance coupled with such awesome incompetence?’ Wow, and no matter how you cut it, bad news for this country.”

My dad, I am proud to say, is the resident liberal/leftie in his retirement home. He was a lifelong Republican until ‘92, when, appalled by the Religious Right, he became a Democrat.

Several years ago, at the age of 75, he bought a PC, taught himself how to use it, and is now the computer guru of the retirement home - proof positive you can continue to learn and help others for as long as you want to.

If bombs may rain in…

If bombs may rain in Baghdad, what’s a little rain here?

The weather forecast for the major protests tomorrow in S.F. and L.A. is heavy rain.

If this happens, then the rallies may be short, but we can certainly march. Rain or no rain.

Considering what’s about to happen to the planet, we can take a little rain. I’ll be there (in full Gore-Tex!). Hope you make it too.

Those zany Germans!

Those zany Germans!

From Boing Boing

“A carnival float shows paper mache figure of German conservative opposition leader Angela Merkel emerging from the buttocks of Uncle Sam during the traditional Rose Monday carnival parade in Duesseldorf, March 3, 2003. Merkel has strongly criticized the German government’s anti-Iraq war stance and recently visited Washington.”

*U.S., Britain, Spain to Hold…

U.S., Britain, Spain to Hold Iraq crisis summit

The United States will hold an emergency summit with allies Britain and Spain in the mid-Atlantic on Sunday in a last-ditch bid to overcome opposition in the U.N. Security Council to plans for war on Iraq, the White House said on Friday.

Washington says that it can attack Iraq without clear U.N. backing but Russia, Germany and France all refused to drop opposition on Friday to any rapid military action by some 250,000 U.S. and British troops massed in the Gulf region.

The hawks are in serious trouble. The resolution won’t pass. If Blair then chooses war, he will be charged with war crimes by some quite serious international law lawyers, not to mention the absolute certainty of major strikes and unrest. Here in the U.S., direct nonviolent actions will no doubt happen in dozens of cities, most notably S.F. where they plan to shut the financial district down.
