European Anti-War Protest Streams Through…

European Anti-War Protest Streams Through Florence.

More than 450,000 anti-war protesters from across Europe marched through this Italian Renaissance city on Saturday, denouncing any U.S. plans to attack Iraq.

The Independent is reporting this as the largest Iraq antiwar protest so far. And the war hasn’t even started yet. Imagine what the numbers will be when it does.

Reuters is saying it was over 500,000 which may make this the biggest peace march ever, including the Vietnam days.

Democrats awaken from torpor

Democrats awaken from torpor

A real live unashamed capital-L Liberal from San Francisco will be the next House minority leader.

Pelosi to be House Minority Leader

Pelosi’s rise reflects a decision by House Democrats to adopt a more confrontational approach to dealing with the White House and their GOP counterparts. Pelosi pledged to draw sharp differences with Republicans on the economy, prescription drugs, Social Security, the environment and other issues so voters will have a clear choice.

“The Democratic Party is the party of the public interest. (Republicans) are the party of special interests. We have to make that clear to the American people,” she said.

He Wrote the Book on…

He Wrote the Book on Stupidity

A man who has written two books on stupidity was arrested on suspicion of trying to arrange sex with a 15-year-old girl over the Internet. The girl turned out to be an undercover male detective.

James F. Welles, the 61-year-old author of “The Story of Stupidity” and “Understanding Stupidity,” was taken into custody last week in Lantana, Fla., after arranging to meet the girl at a restaurant, investigators said. <LA Times>

Drat those accursed Greens

Drat those accursed Greens

“This Green Party phenomenon is not going to go away in California,” said Bill Carrick, a Democratic political consultant. “This is a long-term problem. <And just who might this be a long term problem for?> Particularly in Northern California, there are a lot of voters, both environmentally sensitive voters but also typical liberal Bay Area voters, who vote for the Green Party as a form of protest against more moderate Democrats.”

We Greens view votes for the Democratic Party as a pointless form of protest against the growing strength of Greens. Hey Democrats, stop throwing away your vote!

Calling it a protest vote demonstrates cluelessness. Hmm yes, we Greens are deeply vexed by what Democrats are doing and indeed spend all our time reacting to them.

Twelve months ago Democrats were pointedly ignoring Greens, six months ago they began attacking us, and today, judging from the article, we make them nervous. As well they should be.

Molly Ivins gets it right

Molly Ivins gets it right

Both about the Democrats and about what’s coming next

…the Democrats deserved to lose. What a gutless campaign. It’s one thing to point out that the economy is a mess; it’s another to have no useful plan whatever to offer. How could they let themselves be buffaloed by Republicans on taxes, with all the facts and fairness on their side?

Further, any party so brain-dead it can’t even make an issue out of Enron and corporate sleaze deserves to be out of office. <italics added>

One reaction to electoral disaster should be avoided at all costs: it’s that annoying radical mantra, “Things have to get worse before they can get better.” The only possible response to that bit of specious thinking is, “Not with my child’s life.” It is indubitably true things are about to get worse…The only recourse is to fight them smart and hard. Giving them enough rope to hang themselves with just means we all hang along with them. Sharpen wits and man the battle stations. No time to waste feeling sorry for ourselves.

As Bob Marley said, “Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights”.

As Joe Hill said, ”Don’t mourn, organize”.

PS In her book, Shrub, Ivins, a progressive, Texan, and long time Bush-watcher said about Bush that he’s no mental giant however he unquestionably has an inherent, natural grasp for the rough and tumble of politics. She also said in person he is very difficult to dislike. People laughed and said she was wrong. I doubt they’re still laughing.

Not if, but how soon

Not if, but how soon

America lays down plans to strike within weeks. Britain poised to finally announce readiness of 20,000 troops.

“We believe its going to start in January or February,” he said “The inspection process has to given time to play out, and it’s the best time of year.”

By early January, the US will have gathered a formidable armada in the seas around Iraq to match its naval presence during the first Gulf war in 1991.

US troops saw Afghan slaughter,…

US troops saw Afghan slaughter, claims TV documentary

A British documentary claims to have proof that American troops watched the slaughter of thousands of captured Taliban fighters during the Afghan war. The makers of Channel Five’s Afghan Massacre say they have evidence US special forces were present during the alleged atrocities by Northern Alliance soldiers.

A total of 3,000 are said to have died when they were forced to travel 120km in sealed containers to Sheberghan Prison after the fall of Kunduz. The US Central Command denies the allegations and says no Americans were ever present. But the documentary’s producer, James Doran, believes witness statements and photographs will leave the US authorities with no choice but to investigate.

Addendum: 11/09. The highly reliable Robert Young Pelton says on his mailing list that these reports could easily be Taliban propaganda.
