Time Running Out for Northern…

Time Running Out for Northern Irish Home Rule.

Reuters - Northern Ireland’s power-sharing government started to unravel Friday as two hardline Protestant ministers abandoned their desks and Britain prepared to take over day-to-day running of the province from next week.

And now for something completely…

And now for something completely silly

It’s the mustard museum!  Nearly 4,000 different jars!

Basil pesto mustard and merlot chocolate mustard. Lemon peppercorn mustard and bourbon molasses mustard. Curried apricot. Martini. Key lime macadamia mustard.

Mustard in jars, in tubes, in pots. Mustard from Azerbaijan and mustard from Zimbabwe. Mustard seeds, mustard rubs. Mustard ointments galore.

It’s all here, lovingly displayed, meticulously cataloged, at the Mount Horeb Mustard Museum, a shrine to the pungent condiment

Quote of the day

“A lot of people come in here and say, ‘You used to be a lawyer, and now you’re doing this?’ ” Levenson said.

“But I’ve got a greater opportunity to enrich people’s lives by selling mustard than by practicing criminal law.”

Carter takes out Nobel Peace…

Carter takes out Nobel Peace Prize.

ABC Online - Former US president Jimmy Carter has won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, in a move intended as a criticism of current President George W. Bush’s stance on Iraq.

Nobel committee chairman Gunnar Berge says honouring Mr Carter “can also be interpreted as a criticism of the position” of the current US administration.

Anti-war speech in the House

Anti-war speech in the House

California Rep. Pete Stark gave the following speech, of which I reproduce in its entirety. It is perhaps the most cogent and vicious attack on Bush’s war:

Mr. Speaker, I rise in opposition to this resolution.

I am deeply troubled that lives may be lost without a meaningful attempt to bring Iraq into compliance with UN resolutions through careful and cautious diplomacy.

The bottom line is I don’t trust this President and his advisors.

Make no mistake, we are voting on a resolution that grants total authority to the President who wants to invade a sovereign nation without any specific act of provocation. This would authorize the United States to act as the aggressor for the first time in our history.  Read the complete speech

Did Democratic ad subliminally fag-bash…

Did Democratic ad subliminally fag-bash Republican opponent?

State Sen. Mike Taylor, Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, will withdraw from the race this afternoon, saying a Montana Democratic Party television ad has destroyed his campaign.

The ad is supposed to accuse Taylor of abusing student loan programs, but in reality seems to “out” Taylor as a homosexual:

Here’s the ad. It shows Taylor twenty years ago in a disco-era suit demonstrating how to give a facial, as part of a hairdresser school video. The gay angle is implied not stated, and wouldn’t even be noticed in an urban area like L.A. where I live.  Apparently though, Montanans picked right up on it.

Note: Democrats are responsible for the ad, not Republicans

Parasites Go for Macho Males

Parasites Go for Macho Males

Parasites may be biased: a new study suggests that tiny, disease-carrying critters may have a distinct preference for males. This preferential treatment results in higher death rates for the susceptible males.

Male machismo may be the reason for this increased attraction. Parasites might be attracted to the larger body size, or higher levels of testosterone in males may depress their immune systems.

In case you’re feeling too…

In case you’re feeling too perky

In the past day or so:

Six killed in Philippine bus station attack.

Another Israel suicide bomber.

Two attacks on US soliders in Kuwait. <Kuwait?>.

Yemen ship explosion was terrorism.

And our own home grown “I am God” lunatic has murdered seven so far.

I can hardly wait until tomorrow…

Case of Spinelessness

Case of Spinelessness
by Marc Cooper

Here I thought Marc Cooper, a seriously good journalist, was about to do a Christopher Hitchens and become a “former leftist”.  Thankfully, as is apparent from the article, I was wrong.

AS I WATCHED GEORGE W. BUSH deliver his Big Speech on Iraq earlier this week, I half-expected to see the freckled, grinning visage of Dick Gephardt pop right out of the president’s breast pocket. But then I remembered the House Democratic leader had recently attached himself to a lower part of Dubya’s anatomy and was out of view.

So if this unjustifiable attack on Iraq comes to pass, I don’t want to see so much as a single Democrat out there whining that this is “George W. Bush’s War.” It’s also Dick Gephardt’s war. And Joe Biden’s. And every other Democrat who is voting this week to authorize use of force.

3 Church Leaders in China…

3 Church Leaders in China Are Sent to Prison for Life

After a new trial lasting less than two days, three leaders of an underground Christian church whose death sentences were overturned by an appeals court were resentenced today to life in prison.

In the unusual retrial, which followed a global outcry over China’s fierce suppression of the evangelical Protestant group, the previous charges of fomenting an “evil cult” were dropped.

The authorities have in several cases used rape charges to imprison religious leaders deemed to be a menace. …advocates abroad say that several women named as victims by the police had issued denials and said they had been tortured in police custody.
