Who are they?

The United States Institute of Peace is a non-profit funded heavily by Congress, who just authorized 100 million for their new building in a cushy part of D.C. on the Mall across from the Lincoln Memorial. Their current budget is 22 million a year.

The United States Institute of Peace is an independent, nonpartisan federal institution created by Congress to promote the prevention, management, and peaceful resolution of international conflicts.

Um, maybe they could advise Congress and the President to stop invading so many countries, might be good first step towards peace.

Established in 1984 [by Reagan], the Institute meets its congressional mandate through an array of programs, including research grants, fellowships, professional training, education programs from high school through graduate school, conferences and workshops, library services, and publications. The Institute’s Board of Directors is appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate.

Ok, who are they and what do they really do? Anyone know? Yes, I admit to being just a teensy bit skeptical of an Institute of Peace started by Reagan
