I’m no Lightsquared fan, but why is the FCC saying GPS receivers will need to work with new users of the spectrum as long, apparently, as it’s not Lightsquared? One winner could be DISH TV, which is seeking to develop a similar wholesale wireless network, and not on spectrum near that used by GPS. LightSquared [...] The network planned by start-up wireless broadband carrier LightSquared cannot safely co-exist with the Global Positioning System, Lawrence Strickling, administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, wrote in a letter to the Federal Communications Commission Tuesday. LightSquared flunked two rounds of tests last year and Strickling said in his letter to FCC chairman [...] A multi-agency government panel says the proposed Lightsquared broadband wireless network would interfere with GPS and several safety-of-life systems. Lightsquared is primarily financed by Harbinger Capital, which is controlled by Philip Falcone, a politically connected billionaire now under investigation for securities fraud. Lightsquared has relentlessly been nasty and contemptuous of anyone, including the government, [...] The scandals are getting bigger. Solyndra execs to plead the Fifth at hearing today. This has to be under their lawyer’s advice because it looks so bad otherwise. Why was Congress forced to subpoena head of Obama’s budget office to get info on Solyndra? Solyndra loan: Felony dumb. GOP claims White House interference in LightSquared’s [...] Not Solyndra, but LightSquared, which is majority owned by major Democratic donor Phil Falcone. The Pentagon has worried for months that a project backed by a prominent Democratic donor might interfere with military GPS.
