“This is a victory for the Latin American revolution”

A former Catholic bishop, Fernando Lugo, has become president of Paraguay. He joins Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, Evo Morales of Bolivia, and Rafael Correa of Ecuador as another hard left leader of a South American country who is making economic and social reform a priority.

While Dubya and the neocons have been preoccupied in the Middle East, radicals are getting elected as presidents in South America.

FDIC to Treasury. Brother, can you spare a dime

The FDIC may have to borrow money from Treasury to prepare for a expected wave of bank failures.

UK wants to monitor all phone calls, email, web usage

Image by Chris Weston, British comic strip artist. (Click to view full-sized on his site.)

What’s worse, the British government wants to make the monitoring data available to “security and law enforcement agencies, local councils, and ‘other public bodies’”.

Imagine the possibilities for abuse by whoever wanting to destroy a political opponent. Checks and balances? There don’t seem to be any. Nor a way to guard against the obvious possibility for false positives. Just because I google “terrorist” doesn’t mean I am one.

How many steps separate an innocent British citizen from some misinterpretation or interference or error in the collected and ‘made accessible’ data of text messages and emails, and a forthcoming home-grown version of Guantanamo Bay for people whose pattern of phone calls does not fit the police definition of acceptable?

Mark Warner at DNC

“Just think about this: In four month, we’ll have an administration that actually believes in science.”

Wired notes that Warner’s comment ignited a happy explosion of messages at geek-heavy Twitter.

Leftists protesters at DNC chant “Kill Michelle Malkin” at her

Yeah, that’ll really help progressive causes… I think someone needs a double dose of the chill pill.

As abhorrent as Malkin’s politics are to many of us, no one, including her, needs or deserves to have “kill” chanted at them.

From People’s Press Collective (who have lots of videos)

Michelle Malkin was attacked by protesters and conspiracy nut Alex Jones during the “Shake Your Money Maker” event while Recreate68 attempted to levitate the Denver Mint. Another protester began shouting “Kill Michelle Malkin.”

Y’know, when Abbie Hoffman, Allen Ginsberg, and the Fugs “tried” to levitate the Pentagon in 1967, they got hordes of reporters and made worldwide headlines. It was a fun event, and they weren’t screaming “kill” at anyone, either.

Credit crisis news

Bank crisis gaining steam. More banks are on the troubled list. “The deterioration of banks is accelerating.”

Unintended consequences. UK property owners, faced with a new tax on unoccupied rental buildings, are having the buildings demolished. They can’t rent them and don’t want to pay the tax.

Dumb and dumber
. Lehman may form a new company and buy junk mortgages from itself. This, they fiendishly think, will trick people into thinking they no longer own the TGFKAI (Toxic Garbage Formerly Known As Investments.) I’m guessing it won’t work.
