African socialist collective heckles Obama

Are they playing a nasty game of identity politics? Is he deliberately ignoring a major constituency in hopes of getting more centrist votes? Or is it something else?

GM lost $15bn last quarter

Their combined loss since 2007 is $57,483bn. That works out to almost $90 million a day, which is quite astounding incompetence, when you think about it.

Ludacris. Obama is here

The whole “controversy” over this rhyme seems manufactured to me. It’s not “outrageously offensive,” as Obama huffed nor do I think he actually believes it is.

So much for “unreasonable search and seizure”

TSA says they can take your laptop or other electronic device for as long as they want with no suspicion of wrongdoing needed.

Portable nuclear reactors ready by 2013

The Hyperion nuclear power module is the size of a hot tub, gets buried in the ground, and creates enough power for 20,000 homes.

Hyperion modules have no moving parts to wear down, and are delivered factory sealed. They are never opened on site. Even if one were compromised, the material inside would not be appropriate for proliferation purposes. Further, due to the unique, yet proven science upon which this new technology is based, it is impossible for the module to go supercritical, “melt down” or create any type of emergency situation. If opened, the very small amount of fuel that is enclosed would immediately cool. The waste produced after five years of operation is approximately the size of a softball and is a good candidate for fuel recycling.

Earth2Tech has more. Nuclear is staging a huge resurgence. Once built, nuclear outputs prodigious amounts of cheap power, something the planet badly needs. Let’s hope it gets done safely (because it is going to happen.)

Green links. 8/1

Spain plans world’s biggest high speed rail network.

New thermoelectric material. It converts heat from car exhaust pipes to electricity more efficiently than previous materials, which could be highly useful for hybrids.

D-Link greens its routers. They use up to 40% less power.

MIT researchers split water to store solar energy. Solar power splits water into hydrogen and oxygen, which is then used to power fuel cells and create electricity when the sun isn’t shining.

Is pond scum the new oil?

Ha… ha… ha…

“Money doesn’t make you happy. I now have $50 million, but I am just as happy as I was when I had $48 million.” –Arnold Schwarzenegger

“It’s going to be interesting living out of my car…” — Carly at Ellipsis

She’s afraid the budget cuts mean they’ll be living out of her car soon and worst, have to euthanize their cat Elvis because they would no longer be able to pay for his chemotherapy.

Governor Bankrupterator is deliberately playing a political game of chicken using the financial and emotional lives of state employees as bargaining chips. And to what purpose? Sickening, isn’t it?
