L.A. plans toilet-to-tap water

Key quote: “We are drinking the same water the dinosaurs drank. All our water has been and is being recycled.” As water gets scarcer in dry areas,  recycling toilet water will become more common. If done right, the water is clean, and really, why waster such a precious resource?

Scoble on how to end the Silicon Valley janitor’s strike

To the people who work at these companies: why don’t you stick around until 8 p.m. or so, then drop off your trash in front of the CEO’s office? I guarantee if you do that this problem will get solved by Tuesday morning.

He points out that the janitors currently make $23,000 a year, which works out to about $11 an hour. This in one of the most expensive places for housing in the US. He’s not sure about unions. In this case, I am. Without unions, they’d probably be making minimum wage.

In the 70’s I worked the oil fields in West Texas and got to see what happens when there’s no union (or the threat of a union.) We worked 7 days a week at low wages. There were no days off. The rigs were generally at least a 60 minute drive from town each way. Work and sleep, that’s all you did. I’m sure it hasn’t changed. Had there been a union there, things would have been much different.

Can unions sometimes be corrupt and counter-productive? Sure. But no union on the planet would allow workers to be worked 7 days a week 365 days a year as happens in West Texas.

Fair Use

Erik J. Heels explains clearly and succinctly what Fair Use is.

For blogging, Fair Use would be using maybe a few paragraphs, then adding your own commentary. You can also just re-phrase what the author said (with a link back), then Fair Use no longer applies.

Check our series of posts on Fair Use for detailed explanations. Fair Use also applies to images. Here’s a list of pay and public domain sites for images and graphics.

With a little thought and effort, Fair Use need not be an issue for blog posts. Plus, the less you quote, the more the blog post becomes yours. It then becomes your voice, not the quoted voice, which is what blogging is about anyway.

Tip: The Big Picture

Need rent money? Turn someone in

Crime Stopper agencies are reporting a sharp rise in crime tips for reward money. The motivation is money, not a desire to stop crime. A risky way to pay the rent. for sure, as those informed on might seek revenge should they find out who ratted them out, but it certainly shows how desperate people are getting for money.

Fom Sudden Debt, first quoting the NY Times, then commenting

“Crime doesn’t pay but we do,” say the mobile billboards cruising Jacksonville, Fla. A poster in Jackson, Tenn., draws a neat equation: “Ring Ring + Bling Bling = Cha-Ching.” The bling, in this case, is a pair of handcuffs.

Cha-Ching? Cha-Ching? What’s next? Children squealing on their parents to buy the latest version of Grand Theft Auto?

Have we gone utterly nuts?

Maybe not so much nuts as desperate, and definitely a sign of the economic times.

Bo Diddley

From 1966 on the TNT show. A pioneer of rock. Listen to his early stuff, the backing musicians were stone cold bluesmen. But then, that’s what early rock and roll was, blues with electric guitar and attitude.
