Many attentive people believe that the reason the Bush administration will not bow to expert advice and public opinion and begin withdrawing US troops from Iraq is that the administration intends to rescue its unpopular position with false flag operations that can be used to expand the war to Iran.
This from Paul Craig Roberts, former member of the Reagan Administration. He sees a real danger that Bush and Cheney will stage a fake terror attack or let a real one happen as a pretext for declaring martial law and invading Iran.
Think about it. If another 9/11-type “security failure” were not in the works, why would Homeland Security czar Chertoff go to the trouble of convincing the Chicago Tribune that Americans have become complacent about terrorist threats and that he has “a gut feeling” that America will soon be hit hard?
Why would Republican warmonger Rick Santorum say on the Hugh Hewitt radio show that “between now and November, a lot of things are going to happen, and I believe that by this time next year, the American public’s (sic) going to have a very different view of this war.”
Hmm, why would they tip their hand by talking about it? We heard the same dire predictions about Nixon too, and they didn’t happen. Yes, George Bush is a dangerous loony. But he has no mojo left, and if they actually did something like that and were discovered, he would fall and the country would be in a near-revolution situation.
I also genuinely believe there are enough thinking people in high places, including the military, to block such a thing from happening. Seriously. It’s always been clear to me that the whole Watergate scandal that brought down Nixon was a deliberate and successful attempt by persons unknown to bring down a president. (You don’t really believe that silly nonsense about how Woodward and Bernstein met Deep Throat multiple times in a parking garage and the President of the United States didn’t have the wherewithal to have them followed?)
My real point is that if people get too scared, they won’t act, and concerted action is what we need. Let’s continue organizing to end the war and bring down Bush. Maybe you want to write letters to Congress urging impeachment. Do it. I’ll be in the streets of D.C. on September 15 for the March on Washington. These are not normal times, these are the time for doubling and re-doubling our efforts.
Very few thought Nixon would fall from power. They were wrong.
